Generating unique content on a regular basis can be the most effective method of boosting traffic to your site. How often do you visit a site day after day only to find that nothing changes? Probably never. Search engine rankings are based on a model of actual human behavior. That is what made Google better than the other search engines for a while. Google used the idea that navigating the web at random gave a good approximation of the quality of a site based on how likely it was to be viewed. Now they model behavior more accurately than most people can imagine, since they use the real data from what sites you visit in search results.
So, generating unique content every day puts your site in a different category. Sites that change or add unique content daily also get visited more regularly. They also get indexed by the search engine spiders more often. Most importantly, new content gets people in the habit of visiting your site instead of randomly landing there.
Get in the habit of generating unique content regularly!
- Using a tool like the Google Adwords keyword tool can show you how many searches per month a certain keyword phrase gets. This information is quite valuable, since you can target keywords that actually get searches. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you will get the number of visits shown, since many sites are competing for the same keywords. A good rule of thumb is to target keywords that have fewer than 1000 searches a month. This way you will have a good chance of showing up on the first page of search results.
- Use the keywords to guide your content generation. You need to remember that keywords are the only thing that will get a search engine to index your site properly. Getting inbound links should be the last thing on your mind, and it should happen naturally if you write good articles.
- Use a blog! I actually don’t like the term blog, since it has the connotation of being political or personal. The term I prefer is content management system, and that more accurately describes what a blog is. It’s just a tool to make generating and managing content easier, so you don’t need to worry about html code. I suggest using WordPress if you can’t decide.
